Yesterday was a fun day. I got to pitch robotics to the 1st and 2nd grade and they both want to do the PD and learn more! Second grade even has the time in the Spring to le time try the robotics with their classes. First grade has a busy spring, but are considering where it could work. Everyone is so excited to try new things at this school. It’s pretty incredible.
It was an impromptu meeting. We thought that the afternoon meetings had been canceled, but then our Head stepped in and assigned everyone to a meeting. I was scheduled to meet with Grade 2, but it was nice to have Grade 1 and a science teacher there too. I’m not sure everyone always gets along, but they are all on similar pages and I got to foster some conversation about the digital portfolios, robotics, and other topics that benefit from alignment between grades.
Our 5th grade science teacher also did a Skype with a Scientist this week and it was pretty great. She matched with an ecologist in Colorado who was friendly, young, and really knowledgeable. The kids each got a turn up at the screen to ask their question. It was really well done. Feb 1 was National Real Aloud Day, and I really want our school to participate in a Skype with an author – maybe I can sell it as Read Aloud MONTH?
I met with the Head quickly afterwards to get some substitutes lined up for the PD. She wants me to work on the Vision Statement again. It needs to be a higher level view. I’m trying to dig into it, but I haven’t had the ah-ha moment yet. And the vision statements at our peer schools are all very nice, but not quite as inspiring as I want ours to be. Our Head also had an interesting conversation with a board member about some cool tech. So interesting! And she sent out an email to the community with an update around all the PD our teachers are doing. It’s really impressive, and I was happy to have my name mentioned.
Today is iMovie, Minecraft, Kindergarten coding, and MFA meeting. That’s a pretty good lineup.
M seems to be feeling better. She didn’t want to go to school yesterday, and she said her stomach hurt during the day. But she had lots of energy and seemed happy when I picked her up. I was riding high after the good afternoon at work, so I bought us a pizza for dinner. M didn’t eat much, which is unusual, so I’m keeping an eye on that. I also forgot to go to the store and we really need milk. I’ll have to find some time today – although it will be crazy cuz a snowstorm may or may not be happening this afternoon. The weather people can’t seem to make up their mind so the forecast is 2-8 inches – that’s a big range. They’ve dropped the ball on forecasting the last two storms, so who knows.
I am thinking about blog articles too. Some topics are learning spaces, recap from the LearnLaunch conference, why the department model hinders innovation in learning, and not all screen time is created equal. I really don’t like writing a polished, SEO-ed, imagery-filled post. But it needs to be done.
